Road marking - Side strip/ No Parking and Stopping/ Driving lane [ Japan driving ]

This is 3rd times for the road markings ( painting).

You can see everywhere on the Japanese roads. So, I hope you drive carefully in Japan. This time, I will explain the 3 markings( lines )

  • Side strip
  • No Parking and Stopping
  • Driving lane



[ Side strip ] Mandatory, Better, Good

You should drive a vehicular lane. Side strip is for cyclist and pedestrians.
Japan roads are not separated between Vehicles and pedestrians. So, take care another pedestrians and traffics while you driving.

You should not parking and stopping here for pedestrians and others.
They are 2 types, one is two line painted, another is one line painted and dotted lined. Please take care when you are parking or stopping.

As followings, There are 4 types for driving lane. Basically they are same and you should keep one lane. And, should not frequently change the lanes.
Important point is the rightest lane is for overtaking ( in the 2 lanes or more cases ) 
You can see many Japanese drivers who continually drive the overtaking lanes. This is a violation of traffic laws. Thought I think the similar rules to another countries, I would like you to keep in your mind.

Road marking - Speed limit/ No Parking/ No Stopping/ No entry [ Japan driving ]

This is 2nd times for the road markings ( painting).

You can see everywhere on the Japanese roads. So, I hope you drive carefully in Japan. This time, I will explain the 5 markings

  • Max speed
  • No stopping and parking
  • No Parking
  • No entry zone 
  • No stopping zone



[ Speed limit ]  Mandatory, Better, Good

This is mandatory sign. You should keep this Max speed 30 km/h.
 *Important is not mileage per hour. "Kilometer" per hour.

This ahead sign is same meaning the following sing as previous ones.
You can see both signs at the same time.

[ No parking and stopping ]  MandatoryBetter, Good

This yellow line is mandatory sign. You should not to park and stop there.

You can see both signs at the same time.

This yellow dotted line is mandatory sign. It means no Parking. This is similar to above one and make confuse you a little. You only remember the yellow line of the side walk is " No stopping and No parking"

You can see both signs at the same time.

[ No entry and stopping ]  MandatoryBetter, Good

These signs are same meaning. You should not entry and stop in side. The difference of them is yellow line. Yellow means more strict. Please remember them.

Road marking - No U turn/ No overtake / No lane change [ Japan driving ]

Japan roads have many kinds of marking ( painting).
So, you should take care not only the signs but also the markings on the road surface. From this time, I explain the markings. I would like you to keep in your mind.

[ No U turn ]  Mandatory, Better, Good

This is mandatory sign. You can see everywhere in Japan and should not U turn.  8-20 means to prohibit to U turn from 8:00 to 20:00.

They are same meaning as I informed the previous sign.

[ No Overtake / No lane change ]  Mandatory, Better, Good

There Types of followings are same meaning. You should keep your lane and not overtake whenever you keep in your lane (without crossing yellow line).  And you should not change the another lane by crossing the yellow line.

You may be able to see the following sign as I informed the previous sign when you see the yellow line. They are same meaning.

The 2 types of followings are same marking before.  " No lane change" when you are in yellow line side.
Other hand, when you are in white line side, you can change lane.

[ Keep in your mind ] only 5 Traffic Signs - when you drive in Japan

I introduce only 5 signs that you should not lose when you are driving in Japan.

Japanese roads have more than 100 types of traffic signs like following.
Honestly, I understand you could not see and understand them when you are driving a car. Because they are complicated and set everywhere on the road. And also, even Japanese used to lose these signs.

100 types of traffic signs

First  is

[ 1 ]Stop / Slow

These signs are shown to Stop and Slow.
In many cases, these signs are indicated by Japanese.
So, pleas keep in you mind.
 止まれ(Japanese) = Full Stop
 徐行(Japanese) = Slow
If you do not follow these signs, you may have some traffic accidents or be caught by police (=you should pay some fine).

[ 2 ]No entry

These signs are shown to no entry the road. They have some variations and the meaning is some slight differences. However, you should remember they are the basically same =No entry

[ 3 ]Speed limit

This sign is shown the speed limit. Drive under 50km/h ( about 31 mi/h)
In Japan, use km/h do not use mi/h
Characteristic Number is changed depends on the road.
Even a road may be changed frequently depending on the traffic environment(Pedestrians, cycles,,,,,) like  50 => 40 => 30 => 60 km/h........
Please do not lose this sign for safety and fluently traffic.
And, sometimes there are no indications this speed limit sign. In that case, you can drive as 60 km/h in public road and 100 km/h in expressway.

[ 4 ]Overtake / Overrun

This sign is prohibiting to overtake here.
You can see everywhere this sign. And these set roads are two-way road or have many traffic in many cases. So, this is set for safety.
Please keep in your mind no over take and overrun.

[ 5 ]No U turn

This sign is prohibiting to U-turn here.
You can see the everywhere whether it's a highway or a public road. And, you can not drive to u-turn.

Warning sign - the Upward, Downward, Roadworks, Wind caution [ Japan driving ]

These yellow signs are you can see somewhere. And you can easily imagine what they are warning.

This is 5th time for the Japanese traffic warning signs. I explain about the Upward, Downward, Roadworks, Side wind, Animal, and others signs.



[ Upward/Downward road ] Mandatory, Better, Good

They are shown the up-down of the road. You can see sometime on the express way or national road. You should take care to down or fast on their road conditions. You can see a lot of Japanese driving vehicles that can not keep the consistency speed.  They do not have skills, knowledge, and something who are lazy for driving and no make effort.



[ Roadworks ] Mandatory, Better, Good

This is the roadworks ahead. You can see sometime on the road. You should take care the traffic. Some time, their working roads are fewer lanes with sings(previous signs).


[ Wind caution ] Mandatory, Better, Good

They is shown the windy are here. You can see somewhere the local road, bridge, or mountains and should take care to drive whenever you have a big wind.


[ Animal caution ] Mandatory, Better, Good

They is shown there are a lot of  animals their area. You can see somewhere the local road or mountains, especially Hokkaido prefecture. You should take care to drive whenever they may be appeared. And this sign is same as previous informed sings "動物注意"


[ Caution] Mandatory, Better, Good

This is the caution sign.  This sign is rare, so you can not see this. This sing is set where Driver should take care for various reasons - freezing on the road, complicated crossing, ,,,,

Warning sign - Traffic merging, Change lanes, Two-way traffic [ Japan driving ]

These yellow signs are you can see somewhere. And you can easily imagine what they are warning.

This is 4th time for the Japanese warning signs. I explain about Traffic merging, Fewer lanes, Narrow road, Two-way traffic.


[ Traffic merging ] Mandatory, Better, Good

This is shown there is the merging traffic ahead. You should prepare to merging another traffic from brunch. If you drive on the priority road, it is no need to give a space. However, for a smooth traffic, I would like you to give space for them...  I'm sorry to be honest, there are a lot of Japanese who are not good at for giving way.

[ Fewer lanes ] Mandatory, Better, Good


This is shown there is the fewer lanes ahead. You can see sometimes on the expressway. You should prepare to merging another lanes.
I'm sorry you may be able to see Japanese rough driver in sometimes. Please forgive since don't have knowledge, manners, skills, or everything. The merging rules is enter in order to each lanes like fastener(zipper).

[ Narrow road ] Mandatory, Better, Good

This is shown the road will be narrowed ahead. You can see sometimes on the mountain or winding road. You should take care your speed, another traffic, or somethings.

This is shown there is the two-way traffics from separate way. You should take care opposite traffics. This sign is rare, you may be able to see in the mountain area. Japanese roads are almost two-way roads. This sign is set the point from separate to Two-way traffic.

Warning sign - Rail/Tram crossing, School, Traffic light, Slipper road [ Japan driving ]

These yellow signs are you can see somewhere. And you can easily imagine what they are warning.

They are shown there are the rail/tram crossing ahead. You should prepare to cross them.

This is shown there are the school, kindergarten, nursery, etc. You should take care the pedestrians of them because they suddenly running/ crossing around the road. Please keep in your mind.

This is shown there are the lights ahead. This sign is rare. you can see this where you drive the winding road. That is the place where you can not see far ahead or the end of the curve. If you see this sign, please take care to drive.
